Let's just start this post by saying I have been curling my lashes since I was 15 and I discovered that such wonderful devices existed. And since that time (ahem, we won't count the years, 'k?) I have almost exclusively been loyal to my Revlon eyelash curler. Until this year....
When Revlon changed their design I noticed a huge difference in my lashes. Suddenly the new design pinched the outer corner lashes too much, leaving them at a much more dramatic curl than the rest. I also found the design flimsier (a huge deal when we are talking about a device that could be the difference between lashes and no lashes). So, like any beauty enthusiast (read : obsessive) I went on the hunt for the perfect curler. I tried everything. Tweezerman, ELF, MAC and so on. And every single one of them went back to the shop. Surely it couldn't be this hard to find a decent lash curler that felt sturdy in the hand, curled evenly from outer to inner, and didn't give that tell tale "crimped" look ( let's leave crimping in the 80's where it should reside for all time)
Enter the much raved, often read about, beauty mag loved Shu Uemura Lash Curler. It might possibly be one of the MOST talked about items in the beauty world. Period.
I honestly and truly thought I would be writing about this product in a "not worth the hype" way, and I can say now I am so happy to have been so wrong!
What makes this bad boy so great, you ask? I know this has often been marketed to those with almond shaped eyes, Asian eyes and short lashes, all of which I am not, which had me concerned it wouldn't be the right fit. But fit, is exactly what it does. The curve on the curler reaches my outer most, and inner most lashes and curls them in a way that gives that lovely eye opening effect. No pinching, no crimping, no sharp angles.
The curler itself feels supremely sturdy in the hand, giving me the confidence on even my shakiest hand days, and the curler itself opens just wide enough to fit your lashes in, but not too much that you risk cringe worthy ouch moments.
But what I like best? I barely need to squeeze this with hardly any pressure at all to get a lovely long lasting curl. No heating it up with the blow dryer, no excessive pumping the curler, no clamp and count to 10 needed. Just a few squeezes from the root to tip and in seconds your lashes look the way you wish they were from birth.
Just to drive my point home, I did this handy dandy little comparison collage (ooooohh aaaaaahhhh) to really show the difference between my naturally downwards pointing lashes and then curled with my Shu Uemura.
{1} my natural lashes, fainter that my hair, and barely upturned at the outer corners.
{2} lashes once they have been curled with the Shu Uemura. Still faint, but a huge difference
{3} with one coat of CoverGirl Last Blast WP mascara
{4} with a second coat of mascara.
To me, difference is staggering.
So what did I take away from this experience? Sometimes this insanely hyped products are hyped for good reason (sadly, often they just don't live up). In the Shu Uemura case this is certainly the truth, in my case. I can't see myself ever not using this, it is completely worth the $24 CND I paid for it, and would happily pay again (which wont be for a good while thanks to the replacement pad that comes with it)
